Are you eligible for Free School Meals?

Children may be eligible for free school meals if their parents or carers receive any of the following benefits:

  • income related Employment Support Allowance
  • Guaranteed Pension Credit
  • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Universal Credit

Once a child is awarded free school meals, they will continue to get them for the duration of the school year. Before the start of each school year, each child will have their free school meal reviewed to check whether they continue to be entitled in the next school year.

If you are currently receiving Asylum Support, you do not need to fill in a claim form for free school meals.

Take your Home Office letter to your child's school, and they will contact Welfare and Benefits on your behalf. The letter should confirm your:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • nine digit Asylum Support Number

The government has permanently extended free school meal eligibility to children in all households with no recourse to public funds (NRPF), subject to maximum income and savings levels.
